Abstract
The decade of the 1980s, especially the second half, was an extremely difficult period for the South African economy. Domestic political and social unrest were at levels not previously experienced and in combination with effective international financial sanctions led to serious instabilities in the macro economy, the most prominent being the large-scale net outflow in the financial account of the balance of payments.
