Abstract

The research described in this thesis has been performed with the goal to understand and develop a method for stabilizer-free emulsion polymerization. In order to develop rules for this method, three main issues had to be understood: colloidal stability, emulsification method and polymerization procedure. By definition, emulsion polymerization is a process that starts with an emulsion made out of monomer dispersed in water, usually involves stabilization agent, and upon addition of initiator it polymerizes to create fine polymer particles. As the main disadvantage of this method is the contamination with stabilizing agent in the final product, the goal was to find a method, which does not require the additional stabilizing agent. For that purpose species that is naturally present in water have been used for electrostatic stabilization.
