Abstract

A linearized stability analysis is described for steady states previously obtained [1] by a one-dimensional theory of flow in a vertical standpipe. For all the cases investigated there is a direct relation between stability of the steady state and the sign of the slope of a curve relating solids discharge rate and pressure rise across the system. Thus the stability of steady states may be deduced by inspection of performance diagrams of the type constructed in an earlier publication. It is speculated that this simple relation may be of general validity.
