Abstract

Summary This paper describes the development of urban forestry in Britain between the 1 st National Urban Forestry Conference (March 1988) and the third such conference (August 1993). Two initiatives aimed at maintaining the momentum of the emerging urban forestry movement are outlined: the Stourbridge seminar and the launch of Urban Forests magazine. The contributions of the Countryside Commission, Forestry Commission and Department of Environment are examined, with particular reference to the Community Forests Initiative to create several new forests on the fringe of major cities. An account is given of the 2nd Urban Forestry Conference in 1991. The period saw the com- mencement of several city-wide urban forestry projects, and the origins and early development of these are described. A brief account is also given of developments in consultancy, education and research. The paper concludes with an assessment of the progress made by the urban forestry movement during this period.
