Abstract

Pigmented concretions (>1 mm) occurred in 5 per cent and smaller ones (<1 mm) in 8 per cent of 180 randomly selected pound dogs. This is an overall prevalence of 13 per cent. Their consistency and size and the lack of clinical complications have probably led to under-reporting in the past and the mistaken conclusion that gallstones are rare in the dog.
