Abstract
We have observed Mn 2+ as a trace impurity in several crystals of Al 2O 3. The fourth order crystal field parameters determined from the splitting of the lines, due to the two inequivalent lattice sites in the corundum structure, are as follows: a gβ = +12.4 ± 0.5G F gβ = -113 ±1G An analytical expression is derived which describes the dependence of the splitting of the line on crystal orientation.
