Abstract

ABSTRACT This article examines the effect of the spiritual experience found in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as related to the numerous factors associated with recovery. Participants in the study included volunteers from AA groups located in Southern New Jersey. Of the 56 participants involved in the study 46 reported a spiritual experience as a result of the 12 Step program. Those claiming a spiritual experience were found to be older, have greater lengths of sobriety, heard more 5th Steps and made more 12th Step calls than those who claimed no spiritual experience. Included are anecdotal comments of those who claimed to have a conversion experience.
