Abstract

Recent studies in biology, psychology, philosophy and biblical criticism are all agreed in rendering otiose the belief that man has within himself an immortal soul, distinct from the body, which survives death. According to these studies, there is nothing which can survive death. On the other hand the popular belief in the resurrection of the flesh, coming from Patristic times, and even included in the Apostle’s Creed, has come to appear bizarre to contemplate. Between these two extremes is the biblical doctrine of the Resurrection of the Body. By Body (sōma) is here understood not the physical body but the ‘Spiritual Body’.
