Abstract

The events of September 11, 2001, profoundly affected our world. The outpouring of patriotism that followed these events was both admirable and rife with risks to the spirit of liberty. This essay, based on the President's Address at the annual meeting of the Northeastern Association of Criminal Justice Sciences, examines these risks and the responsibility of those who study and work in the criminal justice system to uphold liberty and law in the face of "new circumstances" of the 21st century.
