Abstract

In polarized lepton nucleon scattering the polarized structure function g 1( x) has been measured recently at CERN by the Spin Muon Collaboration (SMC) and by SLAC experiment E143 on proton and deuteron targets. These measurements can be used to derive the fraction of the nucleon spin carried by the quarks. The result is in agreement with earlier measurements, if a consistent set of procedures and values for the physical constants is used in the evaluation.
