Abstract

Significant changes in the spectrum of ozone are observed in the region of the Hartley band in systems in which ozone is being formed by rapid recombination of O( 3P) + O 2( 3Σg). These changes are shown to be attributable to vibrational excitation of ozone, as opposed to a metastable electronic state. This does not rule out formation of an unobserved metastable state as an intermediate. A preliminary analysis of the vibrational relaxation indicates a relative bias against processes which change the symmetric-stretching quantum number in the lower energy levels.
