Abstract

Using an argon ion laser with piezo-electrically and pressure scanning Fabry-Perot interferometers, the polarised and depolarised spectra of some liquid n-alkanes has been determined over a wide range of temperatures. The relaxation times due to fluctuations in the orientational motions of the molecules are obtained from the low frequence depolarised spectra. These times are in close agreement with the corresponding times measured by flow birefringence. The hypersonic phonon velocity and absorption coefficients evaluated at ~ 5 GHz from the polarised spectra show little dispersion in the frequency range 2 MHz to 5 GHz.
