Abstract

The 2E → 4A 2 emission spectra of hexagonal NaMgAl(C 2O 4) 3·9H 2O crystals, doped with Cr +3, have been recorded. Neither line widths nor splittings are altered when the Cr +3 concentration is increased from 0.1 to 75 mole %. Increasing the temperature from 4° to 77°K only serves to populate the upper component of 2 E. The vibronic structure is very weak in emission and can be assigned to the ground-state intramolecular vibrations. The 0-0 bands coincide in absorption and emission, but the vibronic distributions differ considerably in the two spectra. A monoclinic modification exists in which the trigonal field splitting of 2 E is absent.
