Abstract

The spectra of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones in strong alkali have been examined in the visible region, and the effect of structural variations in the ketone investigated. It is suggested that these are charge-transfer spectra, and the spectra of o- and p-nitrophenylhydrazone anions are also discussed. Standard conditions are stated so that these spectra can be used for the quantitative estimation of ketones in dilute aqueous solutions; possibilities exist for the diagnosis of the structure of such ketones.
