Abstract

We have analyzed the ways of translating occasional words in the English-literary discourse. In our research we use the methods of quantitative and qualitative analysis, comparative method and contextual analysis. The aim of the research is to determine the specifics of the translation of occasional words and to confirm or refute the productive or unproductive forms of the formation of occasionalisms. As a result of the research, the author came to the conclusion that the occasional words have some difficulties for translation. To translate occasionalisms the translator should know the translation techniques, know the features of the word-formation model and also have a lateral thinking and creative abilities. Analyzing our research we come to conclusion that translators use calques (50%) as a productive model. However, other translation techniques were also used: transcription, transliteration, semantic neologism and functional equivalent.
