Abstract

This study addresses two questions. First, are there any changes in the spatial patterns of city population growth in Java over the period 1990–2000 compared with the period 1980–90? Second, to what extent do the changes, if any, reflect the recent formation of extended metropolitan regions? The main features of extended metropolitan region formation in Java are a slowing down of population growth in the core, and the expansion of peripheral areas due to a mixture of suburbanisation and urban economic activities.
