Abstract
The spatial growth rate of a picosecond stimulated Raman Stokes pulse in liquid ethanol has been measured. Solutions to the coupled differential equations describing the spatial growth are found analytically. In certain regions of Stokes growth the experimentally measured spatial growth rate can be used to obtain either the input laser intensity or the Raman gain of the material. No evidence for self-focusing was found.
