E. ; Petrie, P. L. Abstract The radial distribution and total population of globular clusters around the giant Virgo elliptical galaxy M49 (NGC 4472) have been derived by counts of faint (V greater than 19) stellar objects around the galaxy. This work is similar to a previous study of M87. Down to a counting limit of V of approximately 23.3 and out to a radius of 20 arcmin, M49 is estimated to contain 2000 + or - 600 clusters. Just as for M87, the cluster surface density distribution matches the shape of the halo surface brightness curve and can be described adequately by an approximate inverse-square law over most of the range in radius. Unlike M87, the M49 cluster system appears to be almost spherically symmetric in structure, and its outer boundary may be more sharply defined, lacking the extended outer-halo envelope of M87. Possible causes for the striking difference in total cluster populations (2000 in M49 versus more than about 4500 in M87 down to comparable limiting magnitudes) are briefly discussed.
