Abstract

The article focuses on the genre and typological analysis of the early paintings of the “northern cycle” of the 1950s and 1960s by People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Igoshev, dedicated to the original world of the indigenous peoples of the North in the context of Soviet modernisation. This analysis of the works testifi es to the active entry of the “new life” images into the life and traditional culture of the indigenous northerners, and, at the same time, emphasises the originality of the ethnic fl avour. The article suggests the division of stable plots and themes into conditional groups: “new, socialist life” / “old, pre-revolutionary life”, school themes and the theme of enlightenment, pictures of cultural leisure and images of the “new man”. The author concludes that with the help of the works of V. Igoshev, it is possible to reconstruct the picture of the “Great Journey” of the indigenous peoples of the North in the context of the phenomena of Soviet modernisation.
