Abstract
The book provides a history of the Southern Railway System from its inception in 1894 to 1 June, 1982, the date Southern Railways combined with Norfolk and Western Railway under the banner of Norfolk Southern Corporation and created a particularly appropriate closing of the published history of Southern Railway System. The system created a South-wide transportation system and left a legacy of growth to the area. Part of that legacy is the 10,500-mile network of rails that serves the South and a wide area beyond it. This book has brought to print the story of Southern Railway, uniting the 125 or more small lines that combined and recombined over more than a century to form Southern Railway System.
