Abstract

The foundation of the Dutch East and West India Companies is considered an important milestone in the history of trade organization and colonial expansion. They are the first clear instances of big companies and they mark the beginning of the decline of the Portuguese-Spanish colonial power and the rise of the Dutch. In all handbooks and essays on economic history they are seen in this hght and they have been subjected to thorough, scholarly investigation. A bibhography of this subject would contain more than a thousand titles.
