Abstract

With the closure of the BER-II Reactor in Berlin, the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB) started to find new homes for their suite of world-class neutron scattering instruments. In September 2015, it was agreed that the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) would take ownership of the V18 BioRef Neutron Reflectometer. One year later, there was a joint team from ANSTO and HZB dismantling BioRef and packing the parts into shipping containers for the long journey to Australia. The instrument arrived at ANSTO in February 2017 and was renamed Spatz, which is German for sparrow. The process of installing Spatz in the neutron guide hall of the OPAL Research Reactor began shortly after and was completed in October 2018. The hot commissioning process has demonstrated that BioRef will continue to have a long and successful life down under as Spatz. This article describes the steps that were followed to bring BioRef from Germany to Australia and highlights key considerations needed when taking such an undertaking.
