Abstract
The article investigates the history of native public library associations . It is noted the main landmarks of the Petersburg library science society creation and functioning as well its achievements . Also the negative aspects of its activity are identified and analyzed . The systemic flaws of participation of liberal specialists in the post-revolutionary library policy and practice are considered .
