Abstract
This paper considers what source(s) king Alfred used for the translation of Exodus that prefaces his legal code. Over a century ago, Fournier identified the Hiberno-Latin Liber ex lege Moysi as Alfred’s probable source. Since then, most scholars have come to accept his thesis. Recently Patrick Wormald presented an alternative view, suggesting that Alfred used a Late Antique work known as the Collatio legum Romanarum et Mosaicarum. Both views are considered here in an attempt to resolve the issue.
