Abstract
1. 1. The source of calcium for scale regeneration was studied in the descaled goldfish, Carassius auratus. 2. 2. 45Ca-prelabeled fish showed no stimulated rate of calcium resorption from the remaining scales, vertebrae and ribs during scale regeneration. The calcium content of the tissues also remained unchanged. 3. 3. Environmental 45Ca was heavily incorporated into regenerating scales and the rate of incorporation was highest in the second week following scale removal. 4. 4. The results indicate that exogenous calcium, rather than endogenous, is primarily utilized for scale regeneration of goldfish.
