Abstract
I found this book fascinating. It is a composite of historical vignettes, which during the years have appeared from time to time in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery . These usually are in the author's own words and are accompanied by a biographical sketch, or a commentary written by a distinguished surgeon who is well acquainted with the historical setting and the importance of the subject's contribution. Increasing demand has finally resulted in the accumulation of all of these vignettes into one historical source book that outlines and deals with the historical development of all aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery. The book is made especially stimulating by the frequent philosophical editorial comments of McDowell, whose comments attempt to punctuate the lessons to be learned from the historical vignettes. The following comments are examples of his philosophy: Often the important new concepts in the imagination of great minds are amazingly simple.
