No one could have missed the news this week that β-blockers are to be phased out in the treatment of hypertension. The update of Hypertension: Management of Hypertension in Adults in Primary Care (National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), 2006) comes just two years after the original guidelines were published, and signify major changes in the treatment of high blood pressure.
