Abstract

The amounts of acetic acid and hydrochloric acid sorbed by wool from mixtures containing various quantities of the two acids in aqueous solution were measured. The measurements were also carried out with solutions containing acetic acid only. The relationships between the amounts of acid sorbed and the concentrations of the acids in solution when equilibrium with the wool had been reached were of the same type as those previously observed for the chloro‐substituted acetic acids1, 2. The affinity of acetic acid in the concentration range investigated is lower than that of the chloro‐substituted acids and of the same order as that of hydrochloric acid. The change in amount of acetic acid sorbed as the concentration in the solution varies differs, however, from that observed for the other acids previously studied.
