Abstract

What does it mean to become a “solitary writer”? For Shi Tiesheng, the answer arises from an intercultural weaving of thought from Daoism to existentialism, from the poetry of Qu Yuan to the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard, from radical ethics to theology, and, finally, to ideological critique. In the end, Luying Chen shows how Shi transforms the notion of the “solitary writer” into a position that can overcome the forces of any collective ideology to unlock the power of a singular expression.
