Abstract

The solidification and precipitation behaviors of AE42 magnesium at different quenching temperatures were studied. The results showed that the liquid–solid transition temperature range of AE42 alloy was from 630[Formula: see text]C to 590[Formula: see text]C. Precipitation of two kinds of rare earth compounds during solidification had been found. One was Al2RE phase at 616[Formula: see text]C. The other was Al[Formula: see text]RE3 phase at 604[Formula: see text]C. The solidification path of AE42 alloy was L [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]-Mg [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]-Mg+Al2RE [Formula: see text] Al2RE+[Formula: see text]-Mg+Al[Formula: see text]RE3.
