Abstract

The sociology of art, especially as it addresses itself to modern and contemporary art, has been dominated by a 19th century viewpoint that emphasizes the social and psychological alienation of the modern artist and the oppositional role of modern art. A significant shift has occurred in both research methods and conceptual frameworks within the sociology of art, particularly within a sociology of occupations orientation, that demonstrate changes in the field and the challenge that exists to traditional sociological assumptions.
