Abstract

Until 1958, education in France was divided into two categories: on the one hand there was primary education, which was not limited to the elementary classes, but which educated students until the end of the compulsory schooling, that is to say until age 14. After the compulsory schooling, the students having completed the elementary education could receive a professional education in specialized schools; there existed on the other hand, a secondary education which went from the elementary classes until the general baccalaureate.
