Abstract

The number of international students pursuing graduate education in the United States has risen dramatically in the past several decades, more than tripling in number from 1985 to 2015 alone. Moreover, this impressive growth among international graduate students is evident in nearly all fields and disciplines, with the most striking increases in STEM fields. At the same time, relatively little is known about this graduate student population or their experiences in USA institutions. In this chapter, the author presents a model of socialization of international graduate students that builds upon the work by Weidman, Twale, and Stein (Socialization of graduate and professional students in higher education: a perilous passage? Jossey-Bass, San Francisco, 2001), incorporating recent literature and data from their own studies on the topic.
