Abstract
The social programme catered for a variety of interests and made a visit to South Africa come alive. The Johannesburg city tours allowed participants to gain their bearings both historically from the start of the city among gold mines and geographically with distinctive zoning in the rapidly growing city. The disparity was striking between rich neighbourhoods with beautiful homes guarded by high security fences to poor, crowded ‘no-go’ areas. Views of the old gold mines, the modern roads and the variety of districts from a tall building in the centre ‘Top of Africa’ were instructive.
