Abstract

The chapter reconstructs main features of Harre’s social philosophy in order to present this as a philosophy of culture. This reconstruction involves features of Harre’s natural philosophy. It shows how key notions in Harre’s work, such as the sense of self and grammar, relate to a cultural understanding of the individuality of people. Finally, the chapter explains the sense in which Harre’s social philosophy expresses a “critique of culture”.
