Abstract

The chapter provides a thread for the overall arguments of the book by establishing the nature and characteristics of international intellectual property (IP), which are primarily derived from national regimes. After examining the essential territorial principles embedded in the IP system, the chapter captures the social objectives and balances enshrined in international IP and in particular will analyze the public interest aspects of the Berne and Paris Conventions, as well as specific Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) provisions.
