Abstract

Theseassociations may be due to the improved employment andfinancial opportunities that high academic achievementallows, but there are likely other explanatory variables--- such as family functioning, child intellectual or self-regulation abilities, stress associated with chronic poverty,or premorbid mental health conditions, which influenceboth academic achievement and later outcomes. Regard-less, identification of potentially modifiable contributors toschool achievement is worthwhile, as improving a child’sacademic trajectory has important life course relevance.A growing literature has examined physical activityas a predictor of school success, with good reason:laboratory-based studiessuggestthatboutsofhigh-intensityphysical activity can improve immediate cognitive func-tioning, such as impulse inhibition and working memory.
