Abstract

The SMPTE's major role in the recent development of digital video standards has renewed interest in the Society's role and goals in the standardization of motion-picture and television technology. For the past five years, we and other standardization organizations received considerable encouragement to review our standardization procedures because of several proposals for government regulation of standards activity. Here is a brief history and overview of the Society's role and philosophy in regard to voluntary technology standards development in the motion-picture and television industries, with emphasis on the need for cooperation among standards developing organizations.
