Abstract

Many people who attended Cartes 2000 in Paris last October came away with a feeling that the smart card industry had at last come of age. There have been two decades of technological progress, but until recently this progress has taken place in an unresponsive and uncomprehending card issuer market-place. But now, the days when the smart card was a solution looking for a problem seem to be over.
