Abstract

Absorption band-shapes of impurities in solids are often calculated using a semi-classical approximation, which should give correct results in the limit of strong coupling. We have computed some band-shapes to compare with the semi-classical approximation and show that for E ⊗ ε Jahn-Teller systems this limit is only approached very slowly, and is not reached at realistic coupling strengths. Zero temperature is assumed.
