Abstract
ABSTRACT This paper examines the relationship between the number of firms in an underwriting syndicate and the degree of underpricing in an initial public offering (IPO) of common stock. The results indicate that the syndication of IPOs is consistent with cost minimization by financial intermediaries and show why IPOs managed by larger syndicates should be associated with less underpricing.
