Abstract

The introductory soils course at Iowa State University is taught using an audio-tutorial approach. The course originally consisted of 3 hours per week of Independent Study and 1 hour each in lecture and recitation. The Site Study Lab was developed to replace the recitation period. Students spend the hour each week examining and evaluating a 65 ha tract of land. During the quarter, students examine the legal description of the site, learn to read maps, identify each soil on the site and the five soil-forming factors under which the land developed. Each soil is evaluated for its potential and limitation for various agricultural, residential, recreational, and wildlife uses.
