Abstract

We have investigated the crystalline phases, density and porosity of sintered silica samples produced from Brazilian quartz powder and fumed silica to complete vitrification. The affect of fumed silica on the transformation of quartz-cristobalite and the role of fluorine addition on the porosity of the silica compacts are analyzed. Both additions have an affect on the sintering of quartz. Fumed silica nucleates quartz crystals but it is not as effective as fluorine on decreasing the porosity of the compacts.
