Abstract

The effect of a dispersion of antimony oxide particles on the sintering of Ag1.6wt.%Sb powder specimens was studied. The AgSb specimens were sintered either in argon and/or in air. The results indicated that the densification mechanisms which involve the grain boundary between the AgSb powder particles as sinks of vacancies were greatly suppressed by a dispersion of oxide particles in the AgSb specimens. However, surface diffusion was affected very little by the oxide particles. In the presence of oxide particles the sintering process of the AgSb specimens was no longer controlled by diffusion but by the interface reaction. This was related to the size and spacing of oxide particles at the grain boundaries in the sintered neck region.
