Abstract

The simple model for 4 f–5 d transition spectra of rare-earth ions in crystals is reviewed. We summarize successful applications to the 4 f–5 d spectra of Nd 3+, Sm 3+ , Eu 3+, Eu 2+, Tb 3+, Ho 3+, Er 3+ ions in various crystals. Some unsolved issues are also mentioned and discussed briefly.
