Abstract

In traditional texts the silvicultural decision is based largely on an appreciation of ecological requirements for regeneration of desired tree species, the need for protection of seedlings in the early stages of development, and their ability to maintain strong growth under varying degrees of competition. However, many other factors may have a profound influence on the silvicultural decision, including variation in site factors, resource and market factors, the condition of existing growing stock, socio-economic factors, management efficiency, and the requirements for environmental management. The silvicultural decision is examined in these terms, with major reference to the Australian eucalypt forests.
