Abstract

This study focuses on ayas that date from immediately after the Hijra. We have a great many Maghāzī akhbār, both concise and detailed, pertaining to this period of early Islamic history. The main reason we should have knowledge of these akhbār is because of their relationship to the Qur'an. This is why, when ḥadīth compilation first began, traditionists included Maghāzī as one of the sub-chapters of their collections. These traditionists compiled information about the Maghāzī from the Sīra nabawiyya, and from ayas dealing with the Maghāzī and the Sīra, on the basis that Sīra traditions have been transmitted to us via the Qur'an and the Sunna equally, and so the Maghazi should be treated similarly. Therefore, although these early scholars of ḥadīth relied on the isnād and riwāya in certain aspects, they also relied on the Qur'an as a source.
