Abstract

This article describes influences of the cultural background in the therapeutic relationship, taking as an example a student counselling service. Beyond the classical transference-countertransference, in an intercultural relationship there is also a metatransference. Everyone carries his or her own cultural shadow, which becomes visible in an intercultural relationship. This shadow must be acknowledged.
