Abstract

Summary
Atypical mononuclear leukocytes in routine peripheral blood smears from 20 children have been studied and the clinical features of the cases reviewed. There seems reason to believe that these atypical cells are lymphocytes in the process of maturing to histiocytes or monocytes. The stimulus of these changes does not appear to be specific but is frequently associated with viral infections.
