Abstract
The sideband instability of a large amplitude electron plasma wave is studied by the numerical solution of the Vlasov equation. To give the contribution of the wave-particle mechanism exactly the quasilinear equations are solved simultaneously. As a result the wave-particle mechanism is to some extent responsible for the instability of the lower sideband.To explain the instability of the upper sideband, mode coupling must be included.
